He was involved in and led several funded research programmes relating to the teaching of mathematics and curriculum design.

He was part of the team that reviewed the Singapore Mathematics curriculum in 2013. Prior to that he was a teacher and head of department in Singapore schools.

In the last fifteen years, Ban Har has taken up the roles of director of curriculum and teacher development in two Singapore schools - Pathlight School in Singapore, a special school for children with autism from Grades 1-10 (Wales: Year 1 - Year 11) and at the Anglo Singapore International School in Thailand, a mainstream, three-campus school providing education for children from Kindergarten - Grade 12. (Wales: Year 1 - Year 13).

Concurrently, he has conducted professional development courses in mathematics and given presentations to school leaders, teachers and policy makers around the globe in approximately 45 countries in the last 25 years.

He is the author of think! Mathematics that has been adopted in 60 countries and have been translated into several languages.

He sits on two international committees for mathematics education - he is a council member in the World Association of Lesson Studies (WALS) and has presented a keynote at one of its conferences. Likewise, he is on the International Committee of International Group for Mathematical Creativity and Giftedness and has presented a keynote at one of its conferences. He regularly engages with policy makers both in Singapore and internationally to explore how the teaching of mathematics can be improved and developed at strategic and practical levels.

Ban Har holds a Ph.D. in mathematics education in addition to an M.Ed. and an MA.

Ban Har is currently working with The Learning Partnership on the 'Primed for Success' initiative to train teacher's in the CPA approach.

Research, evidence, and classroom practice.

think! Mathematics is rooted in three things that matter most to schools, evidence from research, practical classroom application, and an approach that respects how children actually learn.

Evidence based Reasearch

Think! Mathematics has been written from input from the latest educational research including the 100 classroom study

Practical Classroom Adaptation

In think! Mathematics pupils have ample opportunities to develop core 21st century competencies. These include cognitives competencies such as critical thinking, creative thinking and problem solving.

Components of an Effective Lesson

The five components of an effective lesson are exploring, formalising, journaling, reflecting and practising.

Everything in the Primary Series.

Evidence from research, practical classroom application, and an approach that respects how children actually learn.

  1. 01. Educational research

Written and developed based on the latest educational research and classroom studies including the 100 Classroom Research Study that underpins the design of anchor tasks.

  2. 02. The CPA approach

Consistent with the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract approach developed by Jerome Bruner a structured progression that reflects how children build genuine mathematical understanding.

  3. 03. A problem-solving approach

Designed for teachers to unfold lessons where mathematics is about thinking and figuring things out not following procedures or memorising rules.
